I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since my last post! I definitely got out of the habit of blogging and honestly, didn’t have a lot to talk about. Well, I finally finished the latest free:DO, and I wanted to share. I’m having a garage sale soon, and really wanted to finish it before then, so that helped with my motivation (it’s been lacking lately)!

I used this cute oilcloth, and although it was a little tough to work with, especially on the curved back, I think the result is nice, and a big improvement over the red satin!!

A year ago today, I launched my online shop, Dorothy Jeanne. It’s been a good year and I’ve learned a lot, but I feel like I’m just beginning to know where I want to take my business. I have lots of ideas and new projects in the works, and hope to share them sometime this fall. In honor of the anniversary, I’m having a sale. Enter promo code ONE for 25% off anything in the shop. Sale ends August 29th, 2012.

I hit up some estate and garage sales this past weekend, and now have a great new stock of vintage goods for the shop (I’ll be updating soon). I usually end up grabbing some stuff for myself, too, or decide later something I intended to sell is just too good to give up. I got this sweet bookshelf for cheap, and after cleaning it up, I decided I just couldn’t let it go.

I’ve been wanting a change in the living room and this was a perfect chance for a little switcheroo. I’m still working on styling it, the lamp will change, and I might have to shift the map frames, but it definitely has more personality than before.

I also got this chair and think it will be the next free:DO, since I picked it up for $4 (close enough!).

I already stripped off the awful quilted satin upholstery, and I think it’s going to be really cool when it’s done!

I recently came across this quote, and it completely sums up my feelings lately:

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” – Ira Glass

My shop has been open for almost a year now, and while I’m fairly happy with some of my work, there has always been a nagging feeling that I could do better. Lately, though, I’m sensing a shift in my thinking and coming across this quote really helped validate that. I’m gaining confidence and have lots of new ideas and designs to explore. So anxious to share it all with you!

Remember when I shared this story? Well, I just found out from Kate that she got the internship and started last week. She’s loving it so far and I’m so happy to have played a small part in her success!

While it’s not quite officially summer, the new line in my shop celebrates the bright and cheery nature of the season. In addition to the pillows I shared with you last week, I’ve also added a couple new prints and tea towels. Check them out and let me know what you think!

Just a little preview of some new items that will be in the shop starting June 1st. I’m very excited to share even more with you then!

I love the dipped trend that’s so big lately, and thought I would try it on the latest free:DO. I got this chair ten years ago at an estate sale back in Iowa for $5 (close enough to free), and always meant to do something more with it. The wood wasn’t in particularly good shape, so I didn’t feel bad about painting it. I stripped and stained the lower part of the leg, and then taped off and painted the rest in a semi-gloss black. I also used this gold leaf pen to paint the inside of the cut out. It was really easy and a cool way to add a little gilded detail. I used a vintage looking gold upholstery fabric for the seat, and the pillow features a new fabric design that will be in the shop soon!
