MIND MELD

by Amanda on June 23, 2012

I recently came across this quote, and it completely sums up my feelings lately:

“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. And I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” - Ira Glass

My shop has been open for almost a year now, and while I’m fairly happy with some of my work, there has always been a nagging feeling that I could do better. Lately, though, I’m sensing a shift in my thinking and coming across this quote really helped validate that. I’m gaining confidence and have lots of new ideas and designs to explore. So anxious to share it all with you!

You should definitely check out the free downloads of This American Life on NPR’s site, and the iTunes downloads are worth purchasing! I love this quote from Ira Glass and am going to repost your link on my fb page as a reminder for me and my creative friends.

ps…I think you’re doing wonderful so far with your adventures! Happy (almost) birthday to your shop!

Great quote, Amanda. It’s a field that’s so difficult to share with others and you, of all people, should never under value your work. You’re doing an amazing job and have tons of fabulous things going on! Blog features, magazine features, customers, followers; I think you’re moving faster than you realize and from our perspective it’s all perfect :) Keep it up, you!

Thanks, Sarah! I am definitely my own worst critic, so it’s nice to hear an outside perspective once and awhile. :)
